Septic Smell in the Yard: Causes and Fixes

A sewage smell outside can come from a vent, a loose lid or a failing drain field. How to find the source and what each fix costs.

Find where the smell is strongest

Walk the system with a drawing if you have one: the plumbing vent on the roof, the tank lids or risers, the distribution box and the field itself. A smell near the house on still days is often the roof vent. A smell at the tank points to a lid, riser or cracked cover. A smell over the field, especially with damp or lush grass in stripes, is the warning sign that effluent is reaching the surface.

What each source usually means

  • Roof vent: normal venting pulled down by weather; an extension or carbon filter on the vent is a small fix.
  • Tank lid or riser: a loose, cracked or unsealed cover; replace or reseal it and keep children away from open lids.
  • Distribution box: a tipped or cracked box sending effluent to one trench; HomeAdvisor puts a new box at $500 to $1,500.
  • Over the field after rain: a field that is saturated; watch whether it dries out within a few days.
  • Over the field in dry weather: surfacing effluent, a failing field that needs a pro and usually a permit.

Is it dangerous?

Surfacing sewage carries bacteria and should be treated as a health hazard: keep people and pets off the area and do not mow it. EPA advises keeping vehicles and structures off the drain field and having the system inspected every three years (EPA, How to Care for Your Septic System).

What to do, in order

Pump and inspect the tank first; Angi puts pumping at $292 to $565 and HomeGuide puts an inspection at $150 to $450. If the inspector finds effluent ponding over the trenches, compare repair and replacement and call the county permit office named on your state or county page.
