Septic Backup: What to Do Now

Sewage backing up into tubs, showers or floor drains: what to do in the first hour, how to tell a tank problem from a field problem, and the rules for emergency repairs.

In the first hour

  • Stop using water: no laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing.
  • Keep people and pets away from sewage; wear gloves and boots if you must go near it.
  • Check whether one fixture or the whole house is affected.
  • Call a septic pumping company and say whether the system has an alarm or a pump.

One drain or the whole house?

One slow fixture usually means a clog in that branch, a plumber job. Every low drain backing up at once points to the main line, the tank or the field. If the tank is full above its outlet right after pumping should have emptied it, the problem is downstream, in the line, the distribution box or the field.

Emergency repair rules

In Texas, emergency repairs such as replacing a lid, an inlet or outlet device or a solid line can be made first, but must be reported to the permitting authority in writing within 72 hours (30 TAC § 285.35, Emergency Repairs). Replacing the field itself still needs a permit. In North Carolina and Florida, call the county environmental health office before any field work; our county pages list each office.

What it costs

Pumping usually comes first; Angi puts it at $292 to $565. Jetting a clogged line runs $200 to $1,400 and repair or rejuvenation $1,000 to $5,000 (HomeGuide). If the field has failed, HomeGuide puts replacement at $3,000 to $15,000. See the replacement cost guide and repair vs replacement.
